Giménez Named CAA Rookie Of The Week After Six Point Effort at Navy
The Calle Calatrava, Spain native was a key part in the Hens going 2-0 last week which included a 5-3 win on the road at Navy. Delaware improved to 4-0-1 with a 1-0 win on Sunday afternoon against Columbia.
“I am thrilled for Roberto. He and Evans Frimpong have formed a nice partnership together this season and have put in some crowd-pleasing performances, and more importantly some terrific goals,” said sixth-year Delaware head coach Ian Hennessy. “It is a positive for the program that he is being recognized as one of the best in one of the nation’s top conferences.”
Giménez is the first Delaware men’s soccer player to earn weekly honors this season. The last Blue Hen to be tabbed Rookie of the Week was current junior goalkeeper Brandon Paul on Oct. 5, 2009.
Against the U.S. Naval Academy, Giménez finished the day with six points, stemming from two goals and a pair of assists. The first-year Blue Hen started a flurry of second half scoring, putting Delaware up 2-0 just five minutes into the second stanza.
After the Mids cut Delaware’s lead in half with a goal of their own, it was again Giménez who extended the Hen lead to 3-1. A pair of Navy goals knotted the action at three, but Giménez was not done putting up points on the day.
Giménez sent in the game-winning assist to freshman Kyle Nuel to put Delaware on top for good, followed by a second assist, this time to Frimpong for the insurance goal.
The rookie had tallied a point in each of Delaware’s first four games, but his streak was snapped Sunday afternoon against Columbia as he was held without a goal or an assist in the Hens' 1-0 triumph.
Through the first five games of the season, Giménez is ranked in the top three in the CAA in nearly every offensive category, including ranking first in both total shots (30) and shots per game (6.0). He is currently in third place for points (12) and has the second-best points per game average (2.4).
In the goal column, Giménez is tied for third (4) and is in sole possession of third place in goals per game (0.8). The rookie is tied for first in both assists (4) and assists per game (0.8).
Giménez and the Blue Hens hit the road on Wednesday when they travel to Jersey City, N.J. to take on the Peacocks of Saint Peter’s College. Game time is set for 4 p.m. at Jaroschack Field.
Taylor Morgan of George Mason was named the CAA's Player of the Week.
