Goal in Final Minutes, Lift Rangers
MADISON, N.J. (August 30, 2013)—The Drew Women's Soccer team scored four second half goals in its season-opener to win, 5-4 over Elizabethtown (0-1) in the Cyclone Kickoff Tournament hosted by Centenary College this afternoon.
Sophomore Emma Campbell (Cresskill, N.J./Cresskill) netted the game-winner with 1:20 left in the contest. Campbell and senior Liz Loiodice (Forest Hill, Md./John Carroll) combined for five goals, leading the Rangers to their first victory of the season.
Early in the first half the Rangers fell behind 1-0. With just six seconds left in the first half, Loiodice knotted the game at one when she beat the Centenary goalkeeper in a one-on-one situation.
Elizabethtown scored two goals in the first 10 minutes of the second half to take a 3-1 lead. Minutes later, Campbell added her first score of the game dribbling down the right wing, beating the goalie to the backside post. In the 74th minute, Campbell collected the rebound from a blocked shot and found the back of the net for her second goal of the game.
Just five minutes later, in the 80th minute Elizabethtown scored its fourth goal of the match giving them a 4-3 lead with 10 minutes left to play.
The Rangers quickly answered just two minutes later off the foot of Loiodice as she avoided a sliding tackler and beat the keeper high to the right corner. In the 89th minute Campbell would score her third of the game, giving her a hat trick and the Rangers victory.
Sophomore Sara Nash (Kingston, Wash./Kingston) got the start in net for the Rangers saving five of the nine shots the Blue Jays put on net.
Drew will play the final game of the tournament tomorrow when they take on Centenary College at 4:00 p.m.
