Golden Gabby Strikes Again
Gabby Albano added yet another chapter to her breakout junior season as she scored the golden goal with just 62 seconds remaining in double overtime to send Siena Women’s Soccer to a 1-0 win over Niagara in Western New York. Reigning MAAC Defensive Player of the Week Taylor Dorado added five saves to record her fifth shutout of the season for the red-hot Saints which have won five straight.
Siena (9-6, 5-3) controlled play throughout in out-shooting Niagara (6-6-2, 2-4-1) 23-9 while also holding a 6-4 advantage in corners. The Saints pressed hard for the sudden victory as they registered six shots during the overtime sessions, and their persistence paid off as they recorded their third double overtime victory this season.
In the 108th minute, junior striker Meghan Riccardi quickly threw in a pass to senior captain Michele Tremblay who took one dribble and sent in a cross which Albano volleyed home for her second golden goal this season. Albano also netted the golden goal in Siena’s double overtime triumph over Vermont Sept. 6.
The decisive tally also marked Albano’s MAAC-leading fifth game-winning goal this season which is just one off the program single-season record set by Ashleigh Barone ’12 in 2008. Albano has now notched eight-game winning goals for her career which is fourth most in school history.
Meanwhile Tremblay, who entered the day tied for sixth nationally in assists, tied the single-season program record of nine assists set by Val Kujan ’97 in 1993 with her overtime helper. Tremblay has now totaled 19 career assists to move into sole possession of third all-time in school history.
Shania van Nuland made nine saves for the Purple Eagles which have dropped three straight.
The Saints return to action Saturday for their final home match of 2017 when they host defending MAAC Champion and preseason favorite Monmouth for Senior Day at 1 p.m. The team will honor its seven-member senior class in a pre-match ceremony just prior to kickoff.
