Golden Goal Sends Panthers Past Iowa State
AMES, Iowa - Jelena Sever scored in the 98th minute to send the Milwaukee women's soccer team to a thrilling 3-2 victory over Iowa State in overtime Sunday afternoon at the Cyclone Sports Complex.
The Panthers (6-0-0) trailed the Cyclones (2-5-1) until late, getting an 89th-minute goal by McKaela Schmelzer to send it to OT and having to navigate an ISU penalty-kick opportunity in overtime before prevailing.
"Today was a gritty and gutsy performance," head coach Troy Fabiano said. "This team showed tremendous character and resolve in battling back to get the win. The team never gave in and continued to work until the end."
Sever scored her third goal of the weekend to win it, finding herself open in front of the goal after a cross from Haley Johnson at the 97:32 mark to help MKE extend its league-record unbeaten streak to 26 games (22-0-4).
Schmelzer played the hero role late, netting her second of the campaign off an assist from Lourdes Onwuemeka as time was winding down. The goal came at the 88:42 mark, making it a new contest after Milwaukee held a 1-0 from the 24th minute up until the Cyclones scored twice in a span of six minutes late in the second half.
Iowa State did have a chance to snap the streak in the 91st minute after being awarded a PK, but goalkeeper Elaina LaMacchia watched the attempt sail high and wide without having to make the stop herself.
LaMacchia did finish the afternoon with six saves overall.
Back-and-forth from the start, Milwaukee started to take control of the game and was rewarded in the 25th minute, scoring on a corner kick for the fourth time in the past three matches.
This time it was Erin Corrigan all by herself, as her CK service snuck into the back corner of the goal without any assistance for the 1-0 lead at the 24:31 mark. That goal stood up as the only score of the day well into the game, with Iowa State equalizing on a solid header in the 72nd minute and then taking a lead on a goal in traffic in the 78th.
For the game, shots finished even at 16-to-16, with both also placing eight on target. MKE had four of the 10 corner kicks. Onwuemeka, Sever and Chandler McDaniel all led the way with three shot attempts each.
Up next, just one game awaits, but it will be the Horizon League opener. It will be at Youngstown State Friday, set for a 6 p.m. CST start time.
