Gray Leads Huskers to Overtime Win at Iowa
Iowa City, Iowa - The Nebraska soccer team (7-9-1, 4-5-0 Big Ten) picked up a big road win on Thursday night with a 2-1 overtime victory over the Iowa Hawkeyes (11-4-3, 2-4-3 Big Ten). With the game tied at 1-1, sophomore Caroline Gray delivered her second goal of the season with less than one minute to go in the first overtime period to secure the Huskers' second straight overtime victory of the Hawkeyes.
The Huskers and Hawkeyes entered the game tied for seventh in the Big Ten Conference standing and with two games remaining in the regular season, the Huskers need to finish in seventh place to guarantee a bid to the Big Ten Tournament.
The two squads were locked in a defensive battle early on, as the teams went into halftime tied at 0-0. Nebraska outshot Iowa, 6-4, in the first half, while the Hawkeyes held a 5-4 advantage in corner kicks.
Junior Stacy Bartels broke the 0-0 deadlock at 52:56 with her second goal of the year right in front of the goal following a corner kick from Gray.
The lead didn't last long, as Katherine Lewis put in a penalty kick less than two minutes later to tie the game.
The game went back to a defense struggle over the final 30 minutes of regulation to force overtime.
Nebraska's defense continued to play strong and didn't allow a shot in overtime, setting up Gray's game winner. The Kansas City native took the ball at midfield and broke away from an Iowa defender. From roughly 30 yards away Gray fired and dropped the ball right below the cross bar to secure victory.
