Gregoire, Keenan lead Heidelberg past Hiram
BOX SCORE
TIFFIN - The Heidelberg University women's soccer team, coming off a dramatic double-overtime win over Mount St. Joseph, rode that momentum and defeated Hiram on Saturday afternoon 2-1. The Student Princes broke through for a pair of first-half goals and then stepped up defensively in the 2nd half to hold on for the victory.
The Terriers got off to a fast start, getting a couple shots early, but the 'Berg defense stood tall and then countered quickly. Senior Christina Neal found some space on the outside and played a nice ball into the box that was drilled into the back of the net by Hannah Gregoire to give Heidelberg the 1-0 lead.
The score remained 1-0 for quite some time untilKristen Keenan made a nice move and headed the ball over the keeper to push the lead to two.
That didn't last long however, as Hiram put a quick attack together and scored less than a minute later to make it 2-1.
The score remained 2-1 into the break and held steady through the 2nd period as the defenses battled back and forth, with the Student Princes coming out on top in the end.
Neal and Gregoire led the Heidelberg offense with three shots apiece with Neal recording the only assist of the match. Kenzie Lundqvist picked up six saves in goal for the match.
Playing a very physical soccer match Heidelberg was called for 18 fouls in the match compared to just three for Hiram. The Terriers out-shot the Student Princes in the match 16-13, but the 'Berg came out on top.
"I felt it was really good to see both teams getting after it with high intensity", said head coach Nick Spell. "Our girls stayed focused, played through it, played hard and found a way to put the ball in the back of the net. After that second goal I thought we relaxed a little bit and they were able to counter, but at the end of the day, we fought back, kept the lead, and found a way to win."
With the win, Heidelberg improved to 3-5-1 on the season and will head to Bluffton University on Tuesday, October 30th for their final non-conference match of the year. That game is scheduled to kickoff at 4:00 p.m.
