GW Tops George Mason, 2-1, in #RevRivalry
Sept. 27, 2014
WASHINGTON - George Washington women's soccer scored a goal in each half en route to a 2-1 win over Revolutionary Rivalry foe George Mason on Saturday afternoon at the GW Soccer Field on the Mount Vernon Campus.
The Colonials earned their first-ever win over the Patriots in 22 meetings and wrapped non-conference play with a 7-2-0 mark, matching their 2013 overall win total. GW remains unbeaten on their own turf with a mark of 4-0-0 at home.
The Colonials now lead the Patriots, 1-0, in the second annual Revolutionary Rivalry series.
Junior Nicole Belfonti put the Colonials on the scoreboard in the 16th minute of action when her long shot from 30 yards out on the right side deflected off of the crossbar into the upper left corner of the net as GW took a 1-0 lead. Mason (2-7-0) fired off five consecutive shots over the final 10 minutes of the period, but redshirt freshman goalkeeper Miranda Horn denied three of the Patriots' attempts while two went wide and the Colonials took the one-goal advantage into halftime.
Sophomore MacKenzie Cowley then extended the Buff and Blue's lead to 2-0 at the 58:32 mark. Off of a corner kick by senior Madison Davis, fellow senior Elizabeth Casey shot the ball and Cowley was there to deflect it into the net.
Mason scored its lone tally of the game just under 10 minutes later when Brenna Connell sent a cross from the left side and Erin Mitchelle tapped the ball in to pull the Patriots within one. The squads took turns on the offensive ends over the remaining 22 minutes, firing four shots apiece, but it was the stout GW defense that preserved the Colonials' lead.
Horn set aside five shots between the posts for GW on the afternoon and Cowley took a game-high three shots, putting two on target. Corner kicks were even, 6-6, between the two teams. Mason goalkeeper Laura Glew was forced to make four saves on the afternoon.
GW hits the road to open Atlantic 10 action next weekend when it travels to La Salle on Friday night and Fordham on Sunday afternoon.
