GW Women's Soccer Tops Howard, 3-1
Sept. 27, 2013
WASHINGTON – Three players scored goals as the George Washington women’s soccer team earned a 3-1 victory at crosstown foe Howard on Friday night at Greene Stadium.
Sophomore Brooke Bean netted her first career goal to put GW on the scoreboard, senior Jane Wallis followed with the game-winner and rookie Lina Proska solidified the win with the final tally of the night.
The Colonials (3-2-3) controlled the tempo of the contest and put on consistent offensive pressure with 15 shots while their staunch defense limited the Bison (2-5-1) to just two attempts in each half.
GW took the first six shots of the game before the seventh found the back of the net when Bean collected a through ball from junior Nicole Belfonti and buried a shot in the 31st minute of action. Howard scored the equalizer just over seven minutes later on a penalty kick after a Colonials’ foul inside the box at 37:39.
After taking the 1-1 tie into halftime, the Buff and Blue came out attacking in the second frame. Wallis netted the unassisted game-winning goal at the 65:43 mark when she carried a loose ball to the top of the box and slid a shot through the gap in the Bison’s back line to the left side of goal.
GW struck again 20 minutes later to secure the victory over Howard. Junior Taylor Katz collected a service from senior goalkeeper Nicole Ulrick, carried the ball up the left side and sent a diagonal pass to sophomore Kyla Ridley, whose one-touch assist put Proska in perfect scoring position. The Chatham, N.J., product fired the ball from just outside the top right corner of the box into the left side of net at 85:18 for GW’s third and final goal.
The Colonials forced Bison keeper Kyra Dickinson to make four stops and enjoyed an 11-1 advantage in corner kicks. Ulrick set aside two shots in goal for GW.
GW takes a one-week break before opening Atlantic 10 play at Rhode Island on Friday, Oct. 4. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.
