GW's Berhanu Named A-10 Men's Soccer Player of the Week for Weekend Heroics
Nov. 7, 2011
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - George Washington men's soccer senior Yoni Berhanu garnered his second Atlantic 10 Player of the Week award of the season on Monday following his championship-clinching efforts in two Colonials' victories over the weekend.
Berhanu, who earned a share of his first A-10 weekly award on Sept. 26 earlier this season, scored three of GW's four goals, including a pair of game-winning strikes, in weekend triumphs over St. Bonaventure (3-0) and Duquesne (1-0) that helped secure a share of the program's first Atlantic 10 regular-season title since 1992. The victories over the weekend also marked the Colonials' fifth straight victory overall, fifth consecutive shutout at home, and the 200th career win in retiring head coach George Lidster's 24-year career.
The Potomac, Md., native converted the game-winning penalty kick in the first half and a rebound of his own saved spot attempt in the second half to lift the Colonials to the 3-0 triumph over the Bonnies on Friday. Then in Sunday's critical contest against the Dukes, Berhanu curled in a brilliant 25-yard free kick in the 72nd minute for the deciding tally in the Colonials' 1-0 victory.
Berhanu now leads GW and the A-10 with 10 goals and 0.59 goals per match and is second in the league with 23 points and 1.35 points per match. His 10 goals and 23 points this fall give him 19 goals and 52 points for his career, both totals that rank just outside the program's all-time top 10.
GW (9-6-2) is the No. 2 seed for the upcoming A-10 Championship at Saint Louis University's Robert R. Hermann Stadium this Thursday, Friday and Sunday. The Colonials receive a bye through to the semifinals on Friday at 8:30 p.m. ET where they will face the highest remaining seeded team to advance past Thursday's quarterfinal action.
