Hamilton men's soccer edges SUNY Oswego
Hamilton College's Trevor Bobola '15 and Alec Talsania '17 scored goals and the Continentals held on for a 2-1 non-conference win against the SUNY Oswego Lakers at Hamilton's Love Field on Sept. 4.
This game was the 2013 opener for the Continentals, who improved to 13-0-2 in their last 15 meetings with Oswego. The Lakers' last win in the series was back in 1977.
John McGuinnis '16, Griffin Abbott '15 and Tony Hernandez '17 were credited with assists for Hamilton. Fred Porges '14 made one save and recorded his second career win in goal for the Continentals.
Mike Naab '14 scored Oswego's goal and Todd Lawson '17 stopped six shots in his first collegiate action between the posts.
Hamilton (1-0-0 overall) grabbed a 1-0 lead in the 13th minute. Abbott sent a low cross from the left side into the box and McGuinnis flicked the ball on to Bobola, who redirected it from close range. The Continentals led 1-0 at the half and enjoyed an 11-1 shot advantage in the first 45 minutes.
Talsania gave Hamilton a two-goal advantage in the 70th minute with his first for the Continentals. A loose ball in the box popped into the air and was headed by Hernandez before Talsania fired a one-timer into the back of the net.
The Lakers (0-2-1) made things interesting late. An Oswego player lofted a pass from midfield and Naab outraced two defenders to the ball. His hard shot from the edge of the box on the right side rocketed over the keeper's head and made it 2-1 with 6:05 left. The Lakers took two corner kicks in the final minutes, but couldn't put another shot on goal.
Hamilton outshot Oswego 20-9, and had six corner kicks to three for the Lakers. The Continentals lead the all-time series, 22-5-5.
Hamilton travels to Trinity College for the Continentals' first NESCAC game on Saturday, Sept. 7. Oswego hosts Nazareth College for a non-conference game on Saturday.
