Hats Off to Tangorra, Titans Win 4-1
ALBUQUERQUE, NM - Cal State Fullerton junior Ann Marie Tangorra scored three times in a four-minute span in the first half and freshman Rebecca Wilson added her second goal in as many matches to go with an assist Sunday morning as the Titans rolled to a, 4-1, victory over North Texas to finish unbeaten at the UNM Nike Classic in Albuquerque, NM.
"This was the attacking display we have been working towards," Head Coach Demain Brown said. "Ann and Rebecca were on fire this weekend but, more important, the supporting cast gave them exactly what they needed to be successful in front of the goal."
The win gave evened Fullerton's record at 4-4-1 overall and extended its winning streak to three consecutive matches -- the longest since the Titans opened the 2008 season with four-straight victories. The four goals were also a season high and the most since they posted a 4-0 win over Eastern Washington on Aug. 29, 2010. The Mean Green, who entered the weekend with just one loss in their first seven matches, fell to 5-3-1 overall.
Tangorra, an all-region selection who scored 14 goals for Division II Cal State Los Angeles as a sophomore in 2010, had entered the weekend leading the team in shots (19), but had been held to only one assist through the first seven matches of the year. Sunday morning, she became the first Titan to record a hat trick in almost five years since Brianna Buffington accomplished the feat at UC Irvine on Oct. 29, 2006.
Her first came in the 28th minute as she took a pass from Erica Mazeau on the right side, beat her defender and shot back to the lower left for her first career strike and the 1-0 lead. Less than a minute later, Tangorra made it 2-0 on an unassisted effort, collecting a deflected shot in the box and beating the keeper for her second of the day. She capped off her morning three minutes later off a pass from Wilson, getting the ball in the box and firing it home into the lower left corner for the 3-0 advantage.
The score remained that way through the break, but Wilson wasted no time in tacking on another score just 22 seconds into the second half as she gathered a loose ball in the box and placed her shot into the left corner for an insurmountable 4-0 lead. Wilson and Tangorra combined for 10 of the Titans' 20 shots on the afternoon (five apiece) as Fullerton outshot North Texas, 20-18.
Sophomore goalkeeper Lindsey Maricic, who set a career high with 10 saves in Friday night's overtime win over New Mexico, was busy once again Sunday morning, making eight saves and holding on to the shutout until Kelsey Hodges lofted one into the net in the 72nd minute to break it up. Hodges and Leah Cox finished with four shots apiece to lead the Mean Green.
Cal State Fullerton returns to the pitch with a pair of non-conference matches next week as the Titans travel to San Diego for a clash with the Toreros on Thursday (Sept. 22) at 7:30 p.m. before hosting UNLV on Sunday (Sept. 25) at 1 p.m. at Titan Stadium.
