Havrilla Shines & Meixner Strike
STATEN ISLAND, NY – The Iona College women's soccer team picked up its second win of the season on the road against Wagner on Sunday afternoon. Redshirt freshman Mackenzie Meixner scored her collegiate goal to give the Maroon & Gold the advantage and rookie goalkeeper Emma Havrilla made five saves for her first career shutout.
Sunday's game was the first non-conference shutout victory since Aug. 28, 2015 when the Gaels took down Wagner, 3-0, at Mazzella Field.
In the second minute of the second half, Meixner gave the Maroon & Gold a 1-0 lead with free kick. She entered Sunday's game with no shots on the season, but against the Seahawks, Meixner was a pest with four shots on goal.
Havrilla continued her strong play in net for the Gaels with five saves against 16 total shots faced. The Iona defense was strong in preventing a multitude of shots on net but the freshman still had to come up large in the second half with three saves. Julia Fitzsimmons had a shot on target in the 62' but it was Linday Weiss who tested Iona. She had a shot on goal in the 75' and came dangerously close to netting the game in the 89'.
Freshman Faith Preziosi gave the Gaels an insurance goal in the 90' beating the Wagner keeper one a late one-on-one situation.
Meixner had a team-best four shots, all of which were on goal. Preziosi had two shots on net. Junior Ciara Guglielmo, rookies Taylor D'Alessandro & Jacki Morries, sophomore Kelsie Kearns and graduate Christine Rebus each had one shot.
Luisa Barone and Weiss had a team-best three shots for the Seahawks and Katie Viscardi made six saves in net.
The Seahawks had seven corner kicks compared to five for the Maroon & Gold.
Iona's next game is on the road at LIU Brooklyn on Sunday, Sept. 9. Kickoff is set for 1 PM.
