Hawks Play to 0-0 Tie With Fairfield
ONEONTA, NY – Hartwick and visiting Fairfield played through 110 scoreless minutes in the second game of the Mayor’s Cup Friday night on Elmore Field. Scoring chances were limited throughout the evening yet the Hawks had opportunities in each period.
’Wick held the Stags without a shot in the opening half. Sophomore back Kit Tregear (Brighton, England/BHASVIC) had the game’s first scoring chance with under 31 minutes to play in the first half. A corner kick from senior midfielder Chris Walter (Snyder, NY/Nichols School) made it to the far post where Tregear’s volley was stopped by Stag keeper Matt Turner. Junior forward Dean Fowler (Sydney, Australia/Colo) had a 25-yard shot sail just high of the crossbar with under six minutes left for ’Wick’s second shot.
Both teams only managed a total of four shots, three for the Hawks and one for the Stags, through 75 minutes of action as the defenses gave up little. Fairfield had a few chances but failed to hit the target. A header from Kalle Ronn finally forced an easy save from Hartwick keeper Tom Buckner (Oxford, England/Henley College) for his first stop of the game at 76:29.
’Wick’s best chance of the half came with close to six and a half minutes left in regulation. A blast from substitute Marc Berry (Galashiels, Scotland/Galashiels Academy) from 22 yards out was barely tipped over the bar by Turner and the game went to extra time.
Neither team produced many chances in the first overtime. The Hawks’ best opportunity in the second overtime came after another service from Walter. His cross from the right was taken out of the air on a bicycle kick from Jaime O’Grady (Falkirk, Scotland/Falkirk) in the box but his shot went right at Turner for his third and final save of the night.
Hartwick out-shot Fairfield 11-6 in the match. They also had a 10-0 edge in corners after the first overtime, with the Stags earning a pair in the second extra session.
Buckner, who earns his first clean sheet of the season, finished with two saves.
Hartwick returns to action on Sunday. The Hawks play St. Peter’s University at 3 p.m. The Peacocks lost in overtime to New Hampshire in the day’s opening game on a Christopher Wingate goal at 93:24.
