Heim Guides Seattle U Men's Soccer to 2-1 Double Overtime Victory
In the 108th minute of play, freshman Travis Heim (Ridgefield, Wash.) was inputted into the game with his sights set on one target. The Redhawk forward received a pass from Mikey Ramos (Spokane Valley, Wash.), turned to his right and sailed the game-winner with seven seconds left in double overtime, guiding the Seattle University men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory at Cal Poly Sunday.
"Today was a great team victory against a tough Cal Poly team. It is a tough environment to come down here and play. I am very proud of the guys the way they battled and that we were able to finish with our first win of the season," said head coach Brad Agoos.
While the game concluded with last minute heroics, it was an evened paced match deep into the second half. While both sides traded possession for much of the game, the second half opened with CP peppering the Redhawk goal with a series of shots. Goalkeeper Jake Feener (Rocklin, Calif.) orchestrated the SU defensive efforts, preventing the host-Mustangs from taking the goal advantage.
In the 110-minute match, he would go on to tally four saves.
The Redhawks opened things up in the 73rd minute, when Ramos received the ball. He dished it out to senior Brandon Hamer (Carmichael, Calif.), who cut in from the right side and sent in the go-ahead goal past the Mustang goalkeeper Patrick McLain.
Thirteen minutes later CP evened things up, as Dakota Collins found a Wes Feighner throw in, scoring from five yards out.
Freshman Jens Klitgaard (Nykobing-Falster, Denmark) attempted a last minute shot, in hopes of ending the game in regulation, but his shot went wide sending it into extra minutes.
Both sides battled evenly in the first overtime period, as only one Cal Poly shot was taken in the 10-minute span.
The Redhawks would have the only shot in the final overtime period and they made it count. Heim has scored in consecutive games for SU, while Ramos assisted on both Seattle U goals at Cal Poly.
"It was great that Travis was able to send in the game-winner today. It was his birthday Saturday, so we said 'why don't you score before and after your birthday' and that is exactly what he did," concluded Agoos.
With the victory, SU improves to 1-1-1, while CP falls to 1-1-1.
The Redhawks next return home to host their season home opener versus the Huskies of Washington on Sunday, Sept. 11. First kick is set for 1 p.m. They conclude their two-game home stand with Gonzaga on Sept. 14, in a 4 p.m. matchup.
