Hendrix, Defense Ignite Colorado College
Freshman forward Chanisse Hendrix and senior forward Lynn Froetscher teamed up on a pair of slick scoring plays on Friday, igniting Colorado College to a 4-0 victory over Appalachian State University at Stewart Field.
After a couple of tantalizing opportunities in the early stages of the game, the Tigers finally got on the board in the 28th minute when Froetscher ran down a long ball on the left side, waited for the defense to converge, and slid a pass across the box to Hendrix who was waiting to tap it into an open net.
The same combination clicked again just over 20 minutes into the second half. This time, Hendrix ran down Froetscher’s long pass, touched the ball around Mountaineer goalkeeper Megan Roberson, and calmly scored with a shot to the middle of the net.
“Scoring twice in my first home game was amazing” Hendrix said. “We always look to continue our runs. Lynn and I recognized each other and made some good things happen today.”
Freshman midfielder Megan Kilkenny also got in on the act, scoring her first goal in the 81st minute with a shot from the right edge of the box, then adding an assist when freshman defender Pelemarie Buika clicked later on a corner kick.
At the other end of the pitch, the Tigers allowed only three shots to help sophomore goalkeeper Kate Scheele record her first shutout of the season and the fifth of her career.
“The defense played great in front of me,” Scheele said. “Appalachian State kept me on my toes a little bit in the first half when I had to tip a ball over the crossbar. Our three-back system utilizes our strengths and allows us to be more aggressive by playing a higher line.”
Colorado College finished with a 23-3 advantage in total shots, including a 13-2 margin on target. The Tigers also had a 5-2 edge in corner kicks.
Roberson finished with nine saves for the Mountaineers, who slipped to 1-2 for the season.
“We’re very happy with our defense and our goaltending,” head coach Geoff Bennett said. “In three games, we conceded a penalty kick, a goal that the player who scored said was a lucky bounce, and one really nice goal in overtime. Senior defender Katie Uyenishi had a great game today.”
CC plays host to the University of Vermont at 12:30 p.m. Sunday, preceded by Appalachian State vs. Southern Utah University at 10 a.m. SUU defeated Vermont, 3-1, on Friday.
“Vermont will come out and scrap on Sunday, trying to get something out of the weekend,” Bennett said. “We have to be prepared for a very tough game.”
