High Point surges to a 4-0 win over CSU
HIGH POINT, N.C. - The High Point University women's soccer team rolled to a 4-0 win over Charleston Southern on Wednesday night at Vert Stadium. Senior Kelli Joline led the Panthers with two goals in the contest.
"I thought we were kind of slow in the first half but we came out much better in the second half," head coach Marty Beall said. "I am so proud of the way the team responded to our talk at halftime. They really came out flying in the second half and scored some great goals."
High Point took an early lead in the sixth minute on a goal off a free kick by senior Becca Hemby. The Panthers earned the free kick on the right side in the attacking third and senior Brooke Lisson lofted a pass to the left post. Hemby made the run and scored from just in front of goal to put HPU ahead, 1-0.
Joline doubled the High Point lead in the 49th minute with her fifth goal of the season, making the score 2-0. Senior Taylor Parker played a through ball to Joline who made a diagonal run into the box. The forward touched the ball around the keeper before tapping it into the net.
HPU added to its lead just two minutes later on freshman Jenny Marshall's first goal of the season. Lisson controlled a throw in on the left flank and hit a cross to the near post. Marshall worked to the inside of her mark and headed the ball just inside the near post to make the score 3-0.
Joline scored her second goal of the game in the 71st minute on a penalty kick to make the score 4-0 in favor of the Panthers. HPU received the penalty kick when junior Jacky Kessler was taken down in the box. Joline stepped to the spot and beat the keeper with a shot to the right.
With her two goals against Charleston Southern, Joline tied the HPU Div. I record for career goals with 30. Joline tied Jen Evens who played for the Panthers from 2004-07.
Senior Jesse May made four saves in the game to record her fourth clean sheet of the season. Caitlin Cody played the first half for CSU and took the loss after allowing one goal and making three saves.
High Point finished the game with a 14-11 edge in shots, putting nine shots on target to CSU's four. Joline led HPU with three shots while Hemby, Parker and redshirt-freshman Kelsey Perrell each put up two shots. Anna Sells paced the Buccaneers with three shots on the night.
The Panthers improve to 6-9-1 overall and 4-4-1 in the Big South with the win. Charleston Southern drops to 6-10-1 overall and 3-6-0 in conference action.
High Point returns to the road this weekend as the team will travel to Clinton, S.C., to take on Presbyterian College on Saturday, Oct. 26. The Blue Hose are 8-7-0 overall and 5-4-0 in the Big South following a 1-0 win over GWU on Wednesday. The game between HPU and Presbyterian is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
