High Point wins 2-0 over Campbell at home
HIGH POINT, N.C. - The High Point University women's soccer team wrapped up the 2013 regular season with a 2-0 win at home over Campbell on Tuesday night at Vert Stadium. The win was the 100th of head coach Marty Beall's career.
"I am so proud of the way the team played tonight," Beall said. "We created some very good chances throughout the game. We went against a good Campbell team that is better than its record and it was a great battle. I am very happy for our players."
High Point jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the fifth minute of action when senior Becca Hemby scored her third goal in as many games. Senior Brooke Lisson carried the ball up the left side and delivered a pass to senior Kelli Joline in the middle of the field. The forward turned and hit a ball over the top to Hemby who beat the Campbell keeper and chipped it in for the goal.
The Panthers continued to push forward and in the 27th minute found a second goal off the foot of junior Jacky Kessler. A series of quick passes in the midfield opened space for Hemby to hit a ball over the top of the CU back line. Kessler split the two center backs and touched the ball around the keeper before finishing with a shot off the cross bar from a tight angle on the left. The goal put HPU ahead, 2-0.
High Point finished the game with a 12-7 edge in shots, putting five shots on frame. Kessler led HPU with three shots on the night.
Senior Jesse May made three saves in the game on the way to her fifth shutout of the season. Samantha Lawson made three saves in goal for Campbell.
With Tuesday's win, Beall improves to 100-97-20 in his career as a head coach. Beall has won 44 games over five seasons with the Panthers.
HPU finishes the regular season with an 8-9-1 overall record and a 6-4-1 mark in Big South play. The Panthers will enter the upcoming Big South tournament as the No. 6 seed. Campbell finishes the season with a 7-11-0 overall record and a 3-8-0 record in the conference.
High Point will travel to Farmville, Va., on Saturday, Nov. 2, to play third-seeded Longwood in the Big South Quarterfinals. The Lancers beat HPU by a score of 4-2 in the teams' regular season meeting. The game is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
