WICHITA FALLS, Texas - Midwestern State''s Kelsey Hill scored a goal and assisted on three others to lead the Mustangs to a 4-1 Lone Star Conference win over Texas A&M-Commerce Friday night at the MSU Soccer Field.
"Kelsey had one of her best night''s ever," MSU coach Jeff Trimble said. "I was impressed with how hard she worked."
The Mustangs improved to 4-2-2 on the season and moved to 2-2-1 in league play, while the Lions slipped to 4-4-1 and 2-2-1.
The Mustangs shook off a pair of difficult results on the road last weekend and flashed their potential in front of a home crowd of 703.
"We talked a lot this week about raishing our intensity and worked a lot on corner kicks," Trimble said. "That may have shown with us following shots and finishing opportunities."
The Mustangs jumped on top in the 8th minute when junior midfielder Haley Crandall collected a deflection off of a Hill shot to give the Mustangs an early 1-0 lead.
Hill remained active in the opening minutes of the second half as assisted on an Alyssa Cooper goal in the 50th minute before connecting with Crandall for a second score off of a deflection off of a corner kick in the 54th minute.
"We passed the ball well today and played really good soccer in stretches," Trimble said. "The best thing I can say is we finished opportunities."
Texas A&M-Commerce pulled to within 3-1 when Brionna Minde notched the Lions'' lone goal of the contest off of a corner kick in the 67th minute.
The Mustangs regained a three-goal margin just two minutes later as Hill struck for her fifth goal of the season on yet another corner kick chance.
Midwestern State takes on Texas Woman''s University in a Lone Star Conference contest Sunday afternoon at the MSU Soccer Field. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m.
