Holmes Scores Two Goals in 4-1 Win Over HBU
– Junior forward Christina Holmes scored two goals, while classmates Tana Dake and Rachel Thun each had one score in a 4-1 win over Houston Baptist on Sunday afternoon at the Hurricane Soccer and Track Stadium. TU moved to 3-2-1 on the season, while HBU fell to 1-5 overall.
“I felt like we came out a little slow at the beginning, but we got into a rhythm,” Head Coach Kyle Cussen said. “We’ve worked on finishing every possession when we are in the attacking third and I felt like we accomplished that today. We also got to play a lot of people, which will be important moving forward. I was proud of the win and am excited about going forward. We have two tough games coming up against Oklahoma and Rice, so we’ll take this week to prepare for that.”
Dake picked up a missed shot attempt on the end line, dribbled it back up to the top of the 18-yard box and punched in a goal from 18 yards out from the left side at the 17:19 mark to put the Golden Hurricane on the board.
Just under 50-seconds later Thun gave TU a two-goal cushion as she scored from 12 yards out off a pass from McKenzi McAdams and Tulsa maintained that lead heading into the break.
Holmes came in off the bench and punched in a cross from Alyssa Kaiser in the 47th minute, and then scored again in the 67th minute off a pass from Thun.
Morgan Dean scored for Houston Baptist at the 50:13 mark as she picked up a cleared ball and shot from 18 yards out.
Thun had a team-best four shots, while Darienne Chapman and Dake each had three attempts, and seven others had two shots. Rebecca Defer and Courtney McKeon split time in goal, combining for three saves.
Tulsa amassed a 29-8 lead in shots, including a 13-4 advantage in shots on goal, and took a 5-1 lead in corner kicks.
Tulsa will return to action on Friday, September 9 against Oklahoma. Game time is set for 7:30 pm at the Hurricane Stadium.
