Holy Cross Men's Soccer Defeated By Dartmouth, 3-1
HANOVER, N.H. – Andoni Georgiou scored two goals for the Big Green including the game-winner as the Holy Cross men's soccer team fell to defending Ivy League champion Dartmouth, 3-1, on Sunday. With the loss, the Crusaders fall to 0-2 overall, while the Big Green improve to 1-1 overall.
Holy Cross had three shots saved by Dartmouth goalie Noah Cohen in the first 23:30 of the game. At 24:52, the Big Green almost scored the first goal of the game but a shot by Stefan Defregger hit the post keeping the score tied at 0-0. The Crusaders took a 1-0 lead at 26:45 when junior captain Monty Sanders (Temecula, Calif.) netted his first goal of the season and the fifth of his career with a shot to the upper right corner of the net. At 38:43 the Big Green hit the post again this time with a shot by Colin Heffron. The Big Green tied the contest at 1-1 at the 41:28 mark when Georgiou scored his first goal of the season. Dartmouth outshot the Crusaders by a 10-6 margin in the first half, but Holy Cross took four shots on goal and the Big Green posted one.
Georgiou netted the game-winner with his second goal of the contest at 59:36 off a pass by Brian Joseff. The Big Green increased their lead to 3-1 at the 78:40 mark with a goal by Robin Alnas. Alex Adelabu was credited with an assist. At 86:40, sophomore goalie Michael Thompson (Cromwell, Conn.) made a save on a shot by Alberto Gorini as neither team would score again for the 3-1 final score.
Thompson made one save for the Crusaders, while Cohen earned the win with three saves. The Big Green outshot the Crusaders, 22-8, but each team had four shots on goal. Dartmouth took nine corner kicks and the Crusaders had one.
The Crusaders return to action when they travel to Fairfield, Conn., to meet Sacred Heart on Wednesday, Sept. 5, at 7:00 p.m.
