Holy Cross Men's Soccer Topped, 2-0, At No. 23 Providence

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Despite allowing no goals scored in the first half, the Holy Cross men’s soccer team could not hold on, falling to 23rd-rankedProvidence 2-0 at Glay Field. With the decision, Holy Cross goes to a record of 0-4-2 on the season while the Friars improve to a record of5-1-0. Sophomore Joshua Cintas (San Diego,Calif.) led the team’s offense with three shots taken in the 90 minutes played.
The Holy Cross defense held the Friars to just three shots taken in the first half as freshman goalkeeper Michael Thompson (Cromwell, Conn.) made two saves. The Crusaders had four shots in the first half, two from Cintas, but could not find the back of the net as the teams went into the halftime scoreless.
Providencebroke the tie at 69:33 on a header shot from junior Keith Jecewiz, who knocked it past Thompson. Holy Cross would have two more opportunities to score in the half as Cintas and fellow sophomore Monty Sanders (Temecula, Calif.) were the only Crusaders to take shots. The Friars capitalized on one final chance to score, making it a 2-0 game at the 87:06 mark as Jecewiz connected for his second goal of the game. With the last minute goal, Holy Cross fell by the final 2-0 score to the nationally-ranked Friars.
Thompson registers a record of 0-4-2 on the season after making three saves.Providence’s keeper, Jhojan Obando, finished the game with two saves and collects a record of5-1-0. The Friars totaled nine shots, including five on-goal while the Crusaders had a total of six shooting opportunities, including two on-goal.
Holy Cross competes in its fourth and final contest held inRhode Islandthis upcoming Saturday, Sept. 17. The Crusaders will play the Rhode Island Rams beginning at1:00 p.m.inKingston,R.I.
