Hoosiers Trounce Purdue, 3-0
The Indiana women's soccer team (7-7-1, 2-5 Big Ten) toppled in-state rival Purdue (7-6-2, 2-4-1 Big Ten) on Thursday night at Armstrong Stadium, 3-0. The victory is just the second outright victory all-time against the Boilermakers, with the only other victory coming in the first-ever meeting between the two schools in 1999. The three goals also marks the most goals ever scored by IU against Purdue.
In addition, the win was the 200th in the career of Indiana head coach Mick Lyon.
Indiana got on the board first in the 10th minute when Abby Smith blasted a shot from 14 yards out on the right side that went inside the far post in the upper corner of the goal. It was her second goal of the year with the assist going to Lisa Nouanesengsy.
Then in the 25th minute, Orianica Velasquez scored her fifth goal of the year after Rebecca Candler did most of the work in getting to the end line and found Velasquez wide open in front of the open goal. Nouanesengsy was also credited with an assist on the play.
Velasquez tacked on another goal in the 31st minute on a PK after a foul by Purdue inside the box.
For Candler, she now has 8 assists on the season to tie the IU single-season assist record. And Velasquez has 62 career points to her credit, taking sole possession of fourth place on the career list at Indiana.
Sarah Stone made her third straight start in goal and recorded her second shutout by making four saves.
Indiana continues Big Ten play on Sunday at Michigan State at 12:00pm.
