Hope Men's Soccer Routs Grace Bible
The Hope men’s soccer team pushed its win streak to three matches on Thursday, defeating Grace Bible College 6-0 in front of a Van Andel Soccer Stadium crowd of 502.
The Flying Dutchmen improved their overall record to 3-1-1 .
Forward Brandon Underwood opened the scoring the 17th minute by scoring an unassisted goal with a left-footed shot. It was the first goal of the season for the junior from Grand Rapids (Forest Hills Eastern HS).
The Flying Dutchmen scored fives times during the second half while three different players netted their first goals of the season.
Junior midfielder Cameron Dice of Allendale (Hudsonville Unity Christian HS) recorded an unassisted goal 33 seconds into the second half.
Senior forward Jason Muller of Petoskey then scored in the 51st minute on a 12-yard shot off an assist from junior midfielder Gavin Midlam of East Lansing (East Lansing HS).
Freshman back Thomas Conerty tallied in the 67th minute with a shot from 35 yards out.
Sophomore midfielder/forward David Porte closed the scoring by chipping in two goals in a span of 66 seconds around the 80th minute. Sophomore forward Preston Jaenichen of Elkhart, Ind., (Concord HS) assisted on Porte’s second goal.
Hope scored its most goals in a game since a 9-1 win against the Milwaukee School of Engineering on Sept. 4, 2010.
Two Hope goalies combined to shut out Grace Bible (0-3). Sophomore Ethan Beswick of Grand Haven (Grand Haven HS) made one save in 71 minutes, 18 seconds of action, while sophomore Sam Barthel of Waukesha, Wis., also faced one shot after replacing.
The Flying Dutchmen return to action Saturday with a nonleague match at Dominican (Ill.). Kickoff is 1 p.m. Central Time.
