Hope Women's Soccer Beats Adrian
Two first-half goals powered the Hope College women’s soccer team to a 2-1 win at Adrian College on Thursday.
The Flying Dutch remained in first place in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) standings, improving to 2-0 in league play and 5-0 overall.
Junior forward Nora Kirk of Maumee, Ohio (Notre Dame Academy), struck first to give a 1-0 Hope lead in the 16th minute. Kirk headed in from eight yards out a corner kick from junior defender Maria DeShaw of Holland (West Ottawa HS). It was Kirk’s team-leading fourth goal of the season and DeShaw’s second assist.
Senior forward Kristina Bosch of Holland (Holland Christian HS) pounced on a loose ball near the Adrian goal in the 27th minute for a 2-0 Hope lead. Kirk had the assist.
Junior goalie Kat Dickson of Grayslake, Ill., (Grayslake Central HS) made it stand up for the Flying Dutch. She recorded five saves and allowed only a goal to Adrian’s Sophie Rammal 1:13 into the second half.
Hope handed Adrian (3-2, 1-1 MIAA) its first league loss. The Flying Dutch remain the only team in the MIAA with an unblemished overall record.
The Flying Dutch return to action Saturday, Sept. 14, when it hosts MIAA rival Trine. Kickoff is 7 p.m. at Van Andel Soccer Stadium. There is a free team poster giveaway and autograph signing after the match.
