The Alabama State University soccer team defeated in-state opponent Talladega College 8-0 Wednesday night at the ASU Soccer Complex. With the win, ASU has now won five non-conference games for the first time in the history of the program.
"It's nice to end non-conference play with a win," Head Coach Jodie Smith said. "I can say we are putting things that we have worked on in to play. We didn't give up any careless goals which means we are getting stronger in the back. It's good that we have all of our players back and healthy. We still have a lot to work on but this was a great win."
The Lady Hornets (5-6) scored first in the first half off an assist from freshman Ariela Lewis to junior Alexandria Cannon. The second goal came when Aaliyah Lewis knocked in a unassisted chip shot in the 26th minute of the contest, making the score 2-0. In the 28th minute India Pleasant Scored a goal off an assist from Ariela Lewis, before Lewis scored her own goal off an assist from Alexandria Cannon.
In the second half the Lady Hornets continued dominating the Lady Tornados with a goal from Anastasia McCleary off an assist from Samantha Bruno. Aaliyah Lewis scored her second goal of the game in the 63rd minute to make it 6-0. Iita Pienimaki scored the Lady Hornets 7th goal of the game off a penalty kick in the 68th minute. Aaliyah Lewisscored her third goal from a penalty kick in the 73rd minute making it her second hat trick of the season.
"Lewis continues to step up to the plate and do the things we expected her to do. She is a great additional to the team along with her sister Ariela they are both good players." Coach Smith said on Lewis' second hat trick.
Alabama State out shot Talladega 19-9 in the contest. Junior goalkeeper Kylee Hathaway had four saves in the contest.
ASU returns to action Friday, October 4 when they travel to face Alcorn State at Jack Spinks Stadium. The match is slated for 4 p.m.
