MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Talk about a flair for the dramatic and really using your head.
The Alabama State women's soccer team rallied back after allowing the first goal with two headers including the game-winner from junior Ariela Lewis in the 85th minute as the Lady Hornets ripped away a 3-2 SWAC victory over Prairie View A&M on Senior Day Sunday at the ASU Soccer Complex.
The Lady Hornets (6-10-1 overall, 6-3 SWAC) received two goals and one assist from Ariela Lewis, another goal on a header from Shelbi Vienna-Hallam and one assist from Deidra Woodward to keep in contention for a higher seed in the SWAC Tournament.
"Coming off a not so good performance on Friday night and to come in limited with injuries, we really got contributions from lot of people who hadn't seen a lot of minutes," said ASU head coach Jodie Smith.
Players who made contributions and saw more time than usual were Woodward, Ally Murphy, Kile Powell,Krista Ozimy and Zaria Maynard.
"It was a good, quality team win to battle back when we were pressed. In the end, we got the equalizer and the winner so it was really good win for us on Senior Day."
ASU outshot PVAM 15-5 including 8-3 for shots on goal opportunities.
"Both her [Ariela Lewis] and Aaliyah [Lewis] were dangerous on the offensive end," Smith added. "She [Ariela] was just on the finishing end. She had two really good goals today."
The Lady Panthers (8-7-1, 5-4 SWAC) were led by Courtney Aleman, who scored twice.
It was the final home match of the 2015 season as well for the Lady Hornets as a Senior Day tribute was presented in pregame for the eight seniors on the team.
Next, Alabama State will head up to Huntsville to play Alabama A&M in the last regular season match before the SWAC Tournament begins on Nov. 5 at the John Hunt Complex in Huntsville.
