|Pair of @BamaStateWSC student-athletes earn preseason honors
Alabama State was picked to finish fourth overall after picking up 85 votes, falling behind Jackson State (107), Grambling State (114) and defending champion Prairie View A&M (122). The Lady Hornets were picked to finish ahead of Texas Southern, Alabama A&M, Southern, Alcorn State, Mississippi Valley State, and UAPB.
The Lady Hornets also had a pair of players named First Team Preseason All-SWAC, and another two named Second Team Preseason All-SWAC. Isabella Beortegui was named to the first team as a midfielder after leading the team in goals with six and in points with 12. She was also among the league leaders in both categories. Meanwhile, she was joined on the first team by Mary Martin Mooneyham who finished the year third on the team in scoring with four goals and eight points, including a pair of game-winning goals in the same week against Alcorn State and Mississippi Valley State.
McKenna Lupori and Ashley Thomas were each named Second Team Preseason All-Conference, with Lupori earning the honors as a midfielder. The senior scored a pair of goals and added an assist last year for a total of five points, while Thomas earned the honor as a defender after scoring four goals and adding an assist.
Alabama State opens the 2021 season at home against Faulkner on February 9. Kick is set for 6 pm at the ASU Soccer Complex, which will be at limited capacity due to the COVID-19 pandemic and Alabama State University is a mask-mandatory campus.
