Hornets Soccer Posts 5-0 Win

Box Score The Alabama State soccer team gets their first win of this season a 5-0 shutout against the South Carolina State Bulldogs Sunday afternoon in Montgomery, Ala. at the ASU Soccer Complex.
Earlier in the in the first half Alabama State (1-1) showed great poise as the South Carolina State (1-1) Bulldogs were all over the field. The Lady Hornets out smarted the Bulldogs and started using unexpected personal who made big plays when needed.
The first half saw Alabama State's junior midfielder Iita Pienimaki score her first goal of the season in the 15th minute. Junior Forward SWAC preseason player of the yearAlexandria Cannon also added on a goal of her own in the 41st minute of play to extend the Hornets lead 2-0 heading to the second half.
In the second half of play it was the Hornets bench that put the game out of reach as Sophomore Midfielder Alayna Smith scored a goal in the 48th minute with an assist from senior Forward India Pleasant. Freshman midfielder Ally Murphy then added two goals of her own; first in the 66th minute and then in the 70th minute with an assist from freshman Forward Aaliyah Lewis for the 5-0 shutout.
"Our bench helped us out big today contributing to most of today's scores," head coach Jodie Smith said. "We still have to get better in the backfield andcontinue to find time and gain game experience and live action".
Alabama State's junior goalkeeper Kylee Hathaway had 7 saves in the match.
Alabama State will be back in action when they go on the road to face Tennessee Tech on Friday, August 30th in Cookeville,Tenn. at 4p.m. The Lady Hornets will return to ASU on Sunday, September 1st for a match against Tennessee-Chattanooga at the ASU Soccer Complex in Montgomery, Ala. The match is slated for Noon.
