Martinez knocks home game winner in 100th minute
Alabama State battled from behind to claim first victory of season
"It was certainly nice to get our first home win of the season," Alabama State head coach Jodie Smith said. "It was a big non-conference win against a traditionally tough team. They have been to the NCAA Tournament multiple times in the last 10 years."
Alabama State (1-3) battled back from two deficits in the match to force overtime after Kayla Tillmanknocked home a rebound to tie the match at 2-all in the 54th minute. From there, the two teams had their chances after the equalizer as they combined for 11 shots on goal.
"I felt like we were in it the entire match," Smith said. "Every time we got down, we battled back and got it to overtime with a chance to win. We were able to come up with a goal to win it. It was a back and forth game, but I am proud that we answered the bell and kept playing."
The turning point in the contest came in the 75th minute when Alabama State's Gianna Guyot turned away a penalty kick from Southeastern Louisiana's Maddie Kresevic to keep the match tied.
