Hottsmith Scores Twice in Win Over Loras
Dylan Hottsmith (DeKalb, Ill./DeKalb) scored one goal early, and one goal late to lead the 11th ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Loras College Wednesday night in Dubuque, Iowa. Hottsmith leads the 11-1 Warhawks with seven goals this season and aided his team in retaining possession of the "Hawk Cup"; the cup that goes to the winner of the annual meeting between these two teams. The Duhawks, ranked 16th in the country by D3soccer.com, fall to 5-3-1.
Kyle Clancy (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) managed a shot on goal just 33 seconds in the game to shift the momentum immediately in UW-Whitewater's favor. A header by Justin Stanko (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles North) three minutes later kept the pressure on the Duhawks.
Hottsmith made it 1-0 when a loose ball found itself at his feet in the 15th minute of play.
As the half wore on the Warhawks put more pressure on the Duhawk defense. Shots on goal in the 29th, 32nd, and 34th minute kept Loras on their heels, but the score remained 1-0 in favor of the Warhawks at halftime.
After a series of substitutions by Loras in the 66th minute, the Duhawks made a strong push on offense. Mike Gordon tied the match with his third goal of the season in the 68th minute of play.
Each team fired a shot in the next thirteen minutes, but neither were on target. It wasn't until Hottsmith gained control of the ball in the 87th minute that the score changed. Hottsmith beat his defender and sent the ball to the lower left corner past the keeper to give the Warhawks a 2-1 lead with just minutes remaining.
Loras did earn two corner kicks in the final minutes, but neither resulted in a quality shot and the Warhawks went on to win.
This was the fifth game in nine days for the Warhawks. During that stretch UW-W is 4-1. The Warhawks will continue their strenuous schedule Thursday when they travel to Chicago, Ill. to take North Park University at 7 pm. After that, it's five days off before their next game at home against Central College.
