Hounds Bounce Back For Big Win Over Adams State Grizzlies
PORTALES, N.M. — The Eastern New Mexico University men’s soccer team (4-1) scored the first three goals of its 5-1 victory over Adams State (0-3), Sunday morning at ENMU Soccer Field. Junior midfielder Cantu Palombo (Albuquerque, N.M./Sandia HS/Otero JUCO) tallied the final two goals of the game for Eastern.
The win got the Hounds back on track, after Friday’s setback against CSU-Pueblo and improved ENMU to 4-1 for the second consecutive season. With the season sweep, the Greyhounds are now 5-0 against the Grizzlies. The Hounds are 4-0 this season, when Diego Santos (Sr., F, Natal, RN, Brazil / Universidade Federal de Rio Grande de Norte) has either a goal or assist.
The Greyhounds dominated from the outset, with Carlos Viveros (So., M, Houston, Texas/Morton Ranch HS) scoring on a cross pass from Julian Roberts (Jr., MF, Rio Rancho, N.M./New Mexico), 22:48 into the first half, while Abayneh Crosby (So., F, Houston, Texas/Atascocita HS) followed with a one timer off a pass from Santos, just minutes later, for a 2-0 lead. The Hounds held a 13-1 advantage in total shots over the opening 45 minutes of play.
Michael Stewart (Sr., D, Katy, Texas/Cinco Ranch HS) staked the Hounds to a 3-0 lead, less than three minutes into the second half, but Matt Anderson scored for the Grizzlies, shortly afterwards, to pull ASC to within two goals. Palombo tallied a pair of goals late in the period, both coming off passes from Eishu Kanemitsu (Jr., MF, Tokyo, Japan / Emily Carr Secondary School).
Eastern held a 26-7 advantage in total shots and a 14-3 edge in shots on goal. The Grizzlies held a 4-3 lead in corner kicks. Fredrik Widfeldt (Fr., GK, Yterby, Sweeden / Katrinelundsgymnasiet) made on save to improve to 3-1 on the season, while Paul Pizza made five saves for Adams State.
The Eastern new Mexico University men’s soccer team will return to action on Wednesday, when they visit University of the Southwest, in Hobbs, N.M. The game is set for a 3 p.m. MDT start.
