Hounds Fall in LSC Opener to 11th-ranked Buffaloes
PORTALES, N.M. — Sophomore midfielder Carlos Viveros (Houston, Texas/Morton Ranch HS) pace the Eastern New Mexico University men’s soccer team (6-4; LSC 0-1) with three shots on goal, but the Hounds dropped a 3-0 decision in Lone Star Conference action to 11th-ranked West Texas A&M (7-1-1). Eastern held a 12-10 edge in overall shots and a 5-4 advantage in shots on goal.
The Greyhounds had won two straight at home against the Buffaloes and three of the last four, dating back to the 2008 season. Last season, Eastern picked up a pair of 1-0 victories against West Texas A&M.
Neither team could gain momentum early on, but Wayne Bruton broke the stalemate with his first goal of the season for WT, 26:08 into the game, after taking a cross pass from Carl Prestidge. Dominic Furness added an insurance goal off a Prestidge pass early in the second half and Furness had an assist on Colin Bjostad’s late goal.
The Eastern New Mexico University men’s soccer team will return to action on Monday, to play University of the Southwest. The match is set to begin at 3 p.m. MDT.
