HPU ties West Virginia on the road, 1-1
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The High Point University men's soccer team played West Virginia to a 1-1 tie on the road on Tuesday night in Morgantown, W.Va. Freshman Chris Ramsell scored his first collegiate goal for the Panthers in the draw.
"I am pleased with the team's effort tonight," head coach Dustin Fonder said. "I am disappointed we weren't able to hold the lead after going up 1-0. That being said, I was proud of the way the team dug in after the tying goal and played well on the road during the end of regulation and overtime. Tonight shows the growth that this team has made in a short period of time."
High Point's best chance to score in the first half came in the 11th minute of action. A shot from distance by Lolo Lauture was saved out for a corner kick and on the resulting set piece sophomore Kevin Fallet hit a shot off the crossbar and junior Mamadee Nyepon sent a shot just high.
The Panthers took a 1-0 lead in the 74th minute on Ramsell's first collegiate goal. Ramsell dispossessed the WVU defense on the left flank and dribbled back to the center of the field before unleashing a shot from 30-yards out into that glanced off the bottom of the crossbar and into the net.
West Virginia tied the game at 1-1 in the 79th minute with a header by Craig Stevens. Alex Ochoa hit a ball into the box from the left side forcing HPU keeper Kody Palmer to come off his line. Stevens cut across from the right side and flicked a header past the onrushing Palmer and into the net to knot the score.
The Panther defense limited West Virginia's quality scoring chances throughout the game. While WVU put up 29 shots in the game most were speculative attempts from outside the box. Palmer made eight saves in the game for the Panthers while the Mountaineers Lee Johnston stopped two HPU shots.
The draw moves the Panthers record to 4-6-2 overall on the season. West Virginia moves to 5-6-2 overall.
High Point returns to conference play on Saturday, Oct. 19, when they host Winthrop at Vert Stadium. The game is the first half of an HPU soccer double header and will kick off at 5 p.m. It will be followed by the women's soccer game against Radford.
