Huertas, Nunez & Scarlett Earn MAAC Preseaso
NEW ROCHELLE, NY – It was announced Wednesday that three members of the 2016 Iona College men’s soccer program earn Preseason All-MAAC Team recognition. The Gaels were also selected third in the Preseason Coaches’ Poll.
The attacking duo of sophomore Daniel Huertas and junior Marcos Nunez along with veteran senior defenseman Jordan Scarlett have been voted onto the Preseason All-MAAC Team.
Huertas returns to the Gaels after being named the MAAC Co-Rookie of the Year and an All-MAAC First Team and All-Rookie Team selection last season. Earning three MAAC Rookie of the Week, Huertas had a strong freshman campaign that led to 2015 NSCA D1 All-Northeast Regional Second Team and NSCA Rookie of the Year honors. He was second in the MAAC in averaging 1.15 points per game, tied for first with 23 total points on the season; Huertas scored nine goals, including four game-winners, to go along with four assists.
Nunez was named the 2015 MAAC Offensive Player of the Year, cementing himself as a All-MAAC First Team and NSCA D1 All-Northeast Region Second Team selection. Appearing in 17 games, Nunez was named the MAAC Player of the Week once (Oct. 19). He tied for third in the MAAC with 20 total points, but led the conference in averaging 1.18 points per game; he tied for second in the league with eight assists, averaging 0.47 assists per game. On September 26, Nunez recorded a five-point performance against Niagara, dishing out one assist while scoring two goals.
Scarlett was named an All-MAAC Second Team selection last season; he appeared in and started in all 19 contests for the Maroon & Gold. Finishing with five assists on the season, his average of 0.26 assists per game ranked eighth in the conference. Scarlett is a two-time All-Academic Team member.
Monmouth’s goalkeeper Eric Klenofsky was named the MAAC Preseason Player of the Year.
The Hawks topped the Preseason Coaches’ Poll, receiving all but one first place vote. Iona was voted into third place behind the Rider Broncs. Below are the full lists of the preseason poll and All-MAAC selections:
