Huge RMAC Win, RU Takes Down CSM 2-1
Big RMAC Win for Regis Men’s Soccer; Rangers Take Down Orediggers 2-1
DENVER, Colo.: Huge effort both offensively and defensively propelled the Rangers to a 2-1 victory over Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference rivals Colorado School of Mines this afternoon.
Freshman Connor Adkisson put in quite an impressive performance in between the posts, recording 13 saves on the day and allowing only one penalty kick with 15 minutes left to go in regulation.
Despite 33 fouls on the day, 20 of which came from Mines, and eight yellow cards throughout, both sides put in remarkable performances for fans on each side.
Regis senior Mark Kelly put through two goals in the first half to influence the match in RUs favor early on.
His first goal came in the sixth minute of play after junior Martin Maybin fought with the Oredigger defense and sent the ball over to Kelly. The senior forward then beat the opposition's defense and scored through to the oncoming goalie's left into center goal.
His next goal, and the eventual game-winner, came in the 28th minute of the first half when Maybin and junior Arnthor Kristinsson put in a collective effort to give the ball up to Kelly.
Kelly broke from the CSM defense and went in for a one-v-one opportunity with the Mines goalie, besting him through the bottom right of the goal. This goal brought the Rangers up 2-0 and Kelly up to 11 goals on the season.
Both Regis and Mines put in 23 shots on the day, with six of Regis' being on goal compared to Mines 14.
Regis kept the opposition scoreless until that 76th minute of play when an unfortunate foul gave the Orediggers a penalty opportunity that stayed true bringing the match to a 2-1 decision.
With a few minutes left, Regis had a penalty kick opportunity themselves that CSM goalie Colin Baker denied and with less than 10 seconds left, Mines went on a commanding run, resulting in a shot at the horn that Adkisson impressively saved to finish with a huge win.
Next, Regis will hit the road ad head across town to take on Metro State at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, October 30.
