Huskers Hold Off Hoosiers, 2-1
A pair of corner kicks from sophomore Caroline Gray led the Nebraska soccer team to a 2-1 win over the Indiana Hoosiers on Sunday afternoon at the Nebraska Soccer Field, as the Huskers improved to 2-1-0 in Big Ten play. Now 5-5-1 overall on the season, Mayme Conroy and Jaylyn Odermann each scored a goal off a corner kick from Gray less than five minutes apart in the second half.
Nebraska's defense also put together a solid game and nearly posted its fourth shutout of the season, but the Hoosiers put in a goal with 15 seconds left in regulation to escape a scoreless day. NU goalie Emma Stevens posted six saves on the day and was in position on Indiana's lone goal, but following a corner kick, the ball was batted around by both teams in front of the goal and Caitlin O'Connor was able to sneak a shot past Stevens for her first goal of the season.
With the game tied at 0-0 and less than 30 minutes remaining in regulation, Gray put a corner kick right in front of the goal at 63:49 and in Indiana's attempt to clear, Conroy was able to find the back of the net from 10 yards out. The sophomore from Omaha leads the Huskers with six goals on the year after scoring just one goal as a true freshman last season.
Freshman defender Jaylyn Odermann put in the eventual game winner less than five minutes later at 68:31. Gray booted the ball from the northwest corner of the field and Odermann timed a header just right on the south head of the goal to bury her second goal of the season.
After playing three straight home games, the Huskers now hit the road for three Big Ten contest. The Huskers head to the state of Michigan next weekend for games against Michigan and Michigan State, before playing at Wisconsin the following week.
The Huskers and Spartans are set to square off at 3:00 p.m. (CT) on Friday, Sept. 28, before NU takes on the Wolverines on Sunday, Sept. 30 at 1 p.m.
