Huskies Hold Off Seawolves in Season Opener
BROOKLINE, Mass. -- A first-half goal from junior Eve Goulet and four-save shutout by junior Nathalie Nidetchpropelled the Northeastern women's soccer team (1-0-0) to a 1-0 win over Stony Brook (0-1-0) at Parsons Field in the first game of the 2017 season.
The game marked the debuts of four newcomers to the program as Julianne Ross, Chelsea Domond, Mikenna McManus and Shannon Simmons made their first starts. Domond showed her offensive prowess with three shot attempts. Ross and McManus played a full 90 minutes while Simmons contributed 45 minutes of action.
NU's lone goal came off a corner from redshirt sophomore Lizzie George. She sent a ball high through the box that found Goulet's head and trickled inside the left post to give the Huskies all they would need offensively. It was Goulet's second career goal and was George's first point as a Husky.
Nidetch was tested by the Stony Brook attack throughout the game, but fought off every shot that came her way. With under 23 minutes to play in the second half, SBU forward Julie Johnstonbaugh unleashed a shot from the top of the box that was headed for the top-half of the net. Nidetch lept into the air and knocked the ball over the crossbar for her most impressive rejection of the game.
Junior Nicole Gorman peppered Stony Brook goalkeeper Sofia Manner with three shots on net throughout the contest, the most of any Husky, but couldn't find the back of the net.
The Huskies return to the pitch on Sunday at Holy Cross with kickoff set for 7 p.m.
