Huskies top UConn, 2-1, in season opener
In its 2011 regular season opener, the Northeastern women’s soccer team edged Connecticut, 2-1, on Friday night at Morrone Stadium in Storrs, Conn.
After falling behind in the 22nd minute, the Huskies answered with two goals in the comeback victory.
Freshman forward Lahaina Zoller scored her first career collegiate goal in the 23rd minute to tie the game, placing a shot off the Connecticut goalkeeper and into the net. Senior Veronica Napoli, CAA preseason Player of the Year, netted her first point of the season with the assist.
Northeastern took the lead in the 53rd minute when junior defender Sandra Magnusdottir scored off a corner kick. The Huskies played solid defense, holding off Connecticut the rest of the way for the victory.
On the game, Connecticut outshot Northeastern 16 to 12 and held a slight edge in corner kicks, 5-4, but freshman goalkeeper Paige Burnett was fantastic in net, stopping seven shots in her collegiate debut.
The Huskies are now 12-3-1 all-time in season openers. The win over Connecticut brings their all-time record to 4-3-0 against the Big East.
