EDISON, NJ – The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference announced its men's soccer weekly awards on Monday afternoon. Iona's Ignacio Antequera-Sanchezwas selected as the MAAC Rookie of the Week for the first time in his career.
Nacho Sanchez started on the backline for the third consecutive match to begin his Maroon & Gold career last Tuesday night at No. 19 St. John's. The rookie played all 90 minutes of a narrow 3-2 loss at the hands of the Johnnies.
Sanchez would notch his first collegiate goal on Saturday against Binghamton, helping propel the Gaels to a 3-0 victory over the Bearcats in the team's home opener.
This marks the second straight week a member of the Gaels has earned a weekly award; last week, Eimantas Lotuzys took home Rookie of the Week honors after totaling three points, including his first career goal.
With Iona's win on Saturday afternoon, they improved to 8-1-1 at Mazzella Field since September 8 of last year. The Gaels will travel to face Sacred Heart on Wednesday afternoon before returning to New Rochelle, NY for a matchup with Long Island University.
