BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Ben Iiames’ header just 47 seconds into overtime lifted Campbell to a 1-0 victory over North Carolina State Tuesday night at the Eakes Athletic Complex. Mitchell Cardenas struck a hard shot from just outside the box that deflected wide of the right post for a corner kick. Cardenas then hit a left-footed corner kick to the far stick that Iiames, a junior from Raleigh, nodded in for his first goal of the season. Campbell (5-5-1) gained a man advantage in the 71st minute when left back Gbenga Makinde was red-carded for a foul from behind on Jonathan Ray. Less than three minutes later, CU keeper Ryan Amons had to dive low to stop a hard shot from Zabarle Kollie and Travis Golden cleared the rebound out of danger. “State’s a good counter-attacking team, and I thought we did a good job today to slow their counter. It was a collective effort defensively, working together,” said second-year Campbell head coach Steve Armas. “We’ve been trying to put together a complete first and second half, and this was the closest we’ve come this year to doing that. We’ll continue to build on this and look forward to conference play on the weekend.” State (4-5-2), which was coming off a 2-1 win last Friday over 13th-ranked Boston College, held an 8-4 edge in shots in the second half, but was unable to break through the CU back line. Campbell, which won its second-straight game, finished with a 14-11 advantage in shots. Each team had three shots on goal. State pressed early in the second half. The Wolfpack took back-to-back corner kicks, but missed on 52nd minute headers by Moritz Steidten and Zabarle Kollie. Amons finished with 3 saves for his first shutout of the season. Fabian Otte had two stops in the State nets. The Camels ended a nine-game losing streak against the Wolfpack. CU’s last victory over State came on Sept. 28, 1983, a 3-2 decision in Buies Creek at Taylor Field. Tuesday’s result ended a 3-match losing streak for Campbell against Atlantic Coast Conference opponents. The Camels defeated then No.-7 North Carolina 2-0 on Oct. 28, 2008. Campbell improved to 26-6-3 in its last 35 games during the month of October. In those contests, CU has out-scored its October competition by a 70-39 margin. Campbell held an 8-3 advantage in shots during the first half, but each team managed only one shot on target. State’s best opportunity came in the 25th minute when Gbenga Makinde sent a low pass to the top of the box. Nazmi Albadawi’s first-timer stayed just wide of Ryan Amons’ right post. In the 42nd minute, J.J. Elder ran on to Justin Franz’ long service from half field, but his header sailed wide of the left stick. Campbell starts a 4-match road stretch Saturday when it returns to Big South Conference play in a 2:00 p.m. kick-off at Presbyterian.
