Indiana Falls, 4-1, at No. 8 Penn State
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Indiana women’s soccer team (8-1-1, 1-2 B1G) went into halftime tied with No. 8 Penn State, but the Nittany Lions (9-1-1, 3-0 B1G) scored three second half goals to hand the Hoosiers s 4-1 loss in University Park, Pa. on Sunday.
“We continue to create chances against very good teams, but lately we have not been able to finish them,” Indiana head coach Amy Berbary said. “We will continue to work on our attack and our defense and get better for next week. We will walk away today and get better tomorrow and that’s the most important thing for us moving forward.”
The teams were basically even in shots, with Penn State holding a slight 17-16 edge, while the Hoosiers drew seven corner kicks to just two for Penn State.
The Nittany Lions scored the first goal of the game in the seventh minute but the Hoosiers were able to get the equalizer in the 26th minute. Rebecca Candler sent a crossing pass into the box that found the head of Monica Melink, who headed home her second goal of the season, tying the game at 1-1.
The assist for Candler was the 15th of her career, moving her into fifth place on the Indiana career assists list.
Just over eight minutes after halftime, Penn State took the lead for good and went on to add two additional second half goals to provide the final score of 4-1.
Indiana goalkeeper Shannon Flower made a season-high six saves in goal while the Hoosiers forced PSU keeper Britt Eckerstrom to make eight saves in the game.
Indiana will return home to host Northwestern and Illinois next weekend, starting on Friday at 7 p.m. ET against the Wildcats.
