Indiana Falls to No. 10 Notre Dame, 4-1, to Finish Second at Notre Dame adidas Invitational
SOUTH BEND, Ind. - Indiana senior Carly Samp put the Hoosiers on the board first with a goal in the 12thminute but No. 10 Notre Dame rallied to score three goals in an eight minute span and went on to hand the Hoosiers a 4-1 loss. The game was played at Alumni Stadium as part of the Notre Dame adidas Invitational.
Goalkeeper Lindsay Campbell was named Goalkeeper MVP by the coaches and media following the tournament and was named to the All-Tournament team along with teammates Orianica Velasquez, Abby Smith and Lisa Nouanesengsy.
"We played very strong today in a very physical match," Indiana head coach Mick Lyon said. "But there was never a point that we were getting pushed around or where we backed down and I was very glad to see that. This is another game that we know will go a long way in getting us ready for the always physical Big Ten schedule."
Samp put the Notre Dame faithful on their heels early in the first half when she beat a pair of Irish defenders and then fired a rocket from 25 yards out that was perfectly placed inside the upper corner of the goal for her third goal of the season and the 17th of her career.
With the goal, Samp now has 44 career points to take over sole possession of sixth on the career points list at Indiana. The 16 career goals is also good for sixth on the all-time goals scored list for the Hoosiers.
Lindsay Campbell made five saves in goal to give her ten over the two games to claim Goalkeeper MVP honors.
The Fighting Irish scored three goals in the span of eight minutes late in the first half to take a 3-1 lead and never looked back. Melissa Henderson recorded a hat trick by adding the fourth goal of the game in the second half for Notre Dame.
By virtue of their victory over Western Michigan on Friday and a goal differential of 0 to 2, the Hoosiers claim second place at the tournament.
Indiana returns to Armstrong Stadium next weekend to play host to Xavier and Marquette on Friday and Saturday, respectively.
