BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana University women’s soccer head coach Mick Lyon announced the promotion of Woody Sherwood to assistant head coach on Friday.  Sherwood served two years as an assistant coach under Lyon after coming to the Hoosiers from the University of Louisville following the 2006 season.
 
"Working with Woody these last two years and knowing him as a friend and colleague for over ten years, I know we are working on a common path towards the same goals and with the same philosophy,” Lyon said.  “His 15 years of coaching experience are a tremendous asset to out program and his work above and beyond that of an assistant coach make this promotion well-deserved."
 
This season will mark the 16th season as a collegiate coach for Sherwood, with nine of those years having been spent in the state of Indiana.   After graduating from Xavier in 1991, Sherwood joined the Musketeers staff as an assistant from 1994-97 before moving on to be the head coach at Towson University from 1998-99.
 
“I am excited and honored to be promoted to this position,” Sherwood said. “I’m grateful l to Coach Lyon for allowing me to join the staff in 2007.  It has been a tremendous opportunity working with wonderful staff and players the past two years and I look forward to continued success here at Indiana.”
 
Following his stint at Towson, he served as the head coach for Butler University for seven years and amassed a 63-64-10 record and was named the 2002 Horizon League Coach of the Year after leading the Bulldogs to a school record 15 wins and a conference co-championship.  In his seven seasons, the Bulldogs did not finish lower than third place in the conference.
 
Sherwood, a native of Rockville, Md., is also serving as a regional staff coach for the United States Youth Soccer Association, a position he has held since 2003.   He was the the NSCAA’s National Ranking Chair in 2006 and served on the NCAA Tournament Regional Selection Committee from 2004-06.
 
He earned his bachelor’s degree in psychology from Xavier in 1991 and also received his master’s degree in sport administration from Xavier in 1995.
 
The Indiana women’s soccer team kicks off its season on Saturday, Aug. 15 at Armstrong Stadium with an exhibition game against Valparaiso starting at 7:30 p.m. The regular season gets underway on Friday, Aug. 21 when the Hoosiers host Wright State starting at 7:30 p.m. at Armstrong Stadium.
