Iona Bested by Northern Arizona, 2-0
NEW ROCHELLE, NY – The Iona College women's soccer team lost, 2-0, to Northern Arizona on Sunday afternoon at Mazzella Field. The Gaels managed just three shots in the loss; sophomore goalkeeper Emma Havrilla made eight saves.
GAME SUMMARY
The Lumberjacks came out of the gates firing, sending six shots in Havrilla's direction in the first 20 minutes. Kayla Terhune nearly found the game's first goal in the 32nd minute, but her try grazed off of the left post and kept things scoreless for the moment.
Madison Montgomery tried her luck a minute later, but Havrilla made a stop. Iona's sophomore keeper would make another stop before watching another attempt sail over the net in the 42nd minute. The two teams entered the half scoreless, but Northern Arizona had a hefty advantage in the shots and time of possession columns.
Montgomery would notch her second goal of the young season, on a pass from Terhune, to get the Lumberjacks on the board just over six minutes into the second half.
Taylor D'Alessandro was called for a foul in the box, allowing Terhune a penalty shot in the 59th minute. Havrilla stopped the shot as it bounded towards the lower-left corner. Four minutes later, Paige Maling found the back of the net on an assist from Ana Rivera to give Northern Arizona a 2-0 lead.
Meixner ripped a shot in the 65th minute, but it went wide left. Freshman Sofia Giamanco also missed off to the left side of the cage in the waning minutes of the game.
NOTABLE NUGGETS
- The Gaels registered three shots across the entire game, none of which were on goal.
- The Lumberjacks fired 22 shots, 10 of them on goal.
- Northern Arizona had seven corner kicks; Iona had just one.
- Treloara Harrisson, Amber Crispin and Katarzyna Zawadzki all made their season debuts for the Maroon & Gold.
- Meixner logged 87 minutes in the contest, accounting for one of Iona's three shots.
- Havrilla faced 11 shots in each half; she made five of her eight stops in the second half, one of which was on a penalty kick in the 59th minute.
UP NEXT
Iona will travel up north to face-off with Cornell at 7 PM on Friday. It will be the Gaels' first road game of the 2019 season and will be streamed on ESPN+.
