Iona Drops MAAC Opener At Siena, 4-2
LOUDONVILLE, NY – In its Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference opener, the Iona College women’s soccer team fell to Siena, 4-2. The Gaels had their best offensive showing of the season scoring a season-high two goals netted by junior Charlotte Stuart and senior Emily Hansen.
Siena scored its first goal at the 4:27 mark, taking advantage of a free kick chance in their offensive zone. Junior Michelle Tremblay tapped the score in off an assist from freshman Hanna Longendyke.
The Gaels answered back in the seventh minute with a strike from Stuart. The forward scored her first of the season by knocking home a loss ball in the box that was served in on Iona’s only corner kick opportunity by freshman Amber Crispin.
Siena regained the lead in the 32nd minute via a goal from sophomore Meghan Ricardi. She broke down the right side and snuck it in near post.
The Saints outshot the Gaels in the first half, 9-3. JuniorTiffany Martinez made four saves in the first half.
Mirroring the first half, Iona allowed a quick score from Siena just two minutes into the second half. Tremblay headed in her second of the game off a pass from senior Kristin Connors. The Saints went up 4-1 with sophomore Meghan Riccardi’s redirection strike in the 72nd minute. It was assisted by freshman Madi Belvito and senior Tara Sobierajski.
Senior Emily Hansen scored her first goal of the season in the latter moments of the contest. She dribbled from the right and lofted a long shot inside the far right post just over the outstretched arms of the Saint goaltender.
Freshman Taylor Dorado had two saves in net for Siena. Martinez finished with eight for the Gaels.
The Maroon & Gold had seven shots and four on goal. Besides the goal scorer’s Stuart and Hansen, two additional shots on goal were by Crispin and sophomoreKiri Dale.
Siena outshot Iona 18-7, and had an 11-1 edge in corner kick chances.
The Maroon & Gold travel to Jersey City, NJ on Saturday, Sept. 24 for a 12:00 PM kickoff against the Saint Peter’s Peacocks.
