NEW ROCHELLE, NY - The Iona College men's soccer team recorded its second overtime victory of the season with a 2-1 win over MAAC foe Niagara at Mazzella Field. The Gaels maintain an unblemished league record with a 3-0 mark in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play (10-1 overall).
Iona got off to a 1-0 lead on freshman F Ignacio Maganto's third career goal in the 23rd minute. Maganto was assisted by sophomore MF Franklin Castellanos, who increased his NCAA Division I-leading assist total to eight. The Maroon & Gold closed the first half with a 9-3 shot advantage and the one-goal lead.
The Purple Eagles (6-3-2, 1-1-1 MAAC) rallied back with a 73rd minute tally to tie the game at one. Niagara's Carl Haworth emerged from a chaotic moment in front of the Iona net to score his eighth goal of the year, with Rene De Zorzi and Liam Gilbert earning assists on the play.
Neither side was able to separate itself through the end of regulation, though Iona would come close as the clock wound down. Each team had a close call during the first overtime as a shot by Niagara's Bryan Da Cruz hit the post and a laid-out header by Iona sophomore MF MJ Nestor was saved by goalkeeper Brett Petricek.
Just under two minutes into the second overtime, Gael junior MF Ansger Otto put the game away with season goal number four, assisted by Samuel Adjei.
Petricek finished the day with four saves while Iona's Borja Barbero had six saves. The Gaels led 19-10 in shots and 7-4 in corner kicks over the match.
The squad returns to action on Sunday, Oct. 9 hosting Canisius at 1:00 pm.
