Iona Men's Soccer Suffers Setback
NEW ROCHELLE, NY – The Iona College dropped its second MAAC contest of the season in Poughkeepsie, NY against Marist on Wednesday evening. The Red Foxes survived placed the entire second-half a man down and bested the Maroon & Gold, 2-1.
GAME SUMMARY
Marist jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 17' with Skylar Conway scoring his first goal of the season via an assist from Dav Nikansah-Siriboe. Less than five minutes later, the Red Foxes took a 2-0 lead when Conway assisted on Beau Horberger's eventual game-winning tally. Conway come moments away from scoring his second of the game, but sophomore Giuliano Santucci's save for Iona ricocheted directly to the feet of Horberger.
Senior Ali Dwaha scored his first goal in the Maroon & Gold uniform to get Iona on the scoreboard. Freshman Mauro Bravo earned an assist on the score.
The Gaels played the final 50 minutes of the game a man-up when Alex Reis was given a red card. Despite the advantage the entirety of the second half, Marist outshot Iona 10-7 and collected a 4-0 corner kick surplus. Iona did not have a shot on goal over the final 15 minutes or any shot following senior Humbert Ferrer's off-target attempt at 77:17.
Sophomore Guiliano Santucci made four saves in his return to his former school. Ryan Sinnott made four saves for the Red Foxes.
Bravo had a team-high three shots. Sophomore Najim Romero had a team-best two shots on goal.
STATISTICAL NOTES
- Bravo played a full 90 for the first time at Iona. He recorded an assist for the second straight game and he now has three helpers this season.
- Iona's nine shots is the second-lowest total of the season. The fewest shot total of eight came at New Hampshire on Sept. 12.
- The Red Foxes had six corner kicks compared to just one for the Gaels. It is the largest discrepancy of the season thus far. Marist is one of four teams to have a Maroon & Gold opponent-best six corner kicks.
- Iona's one corner kicks tied a season-low, matching the effort at New Hampshire on Sept. 12.
- Marist's 15 shots is the highest total for a MAAC opponent against Iona this season. Canisius and Rider had just eight and nine respectively.
UP NEXT
The Maroon & Gold return to action at home against the Saint Peter's Peacocks on Saturday, Oct. 6. Kick-off is set for 3 p.m. and the game is being broadcasted on ESPN3.
