Iona Tops Adelphi, 2-0, in Home Opener
NEW ROCHELLE, NY - The Iona College men's soccer team won its 2011 home opener, shutting out Adelphi by a score of 2-0 at Mazzella Field. With their third straight home opening victory, the Gaels are now 6-1 while the Panthers fell to 1-4.
After a scoreless first half during which Iona outshot Adelphi 12-4, junior Mario Di Miceli recorded the first goal of the afternoon in the 51st minute. Franklin Castellanos moved the ball over to Samuel Adjei, who centered it in front of the net where Di Miceli was positioned to strike. Sticking his right foot out in front of him, Di Miceli tipped the ball into the back of the net to put the Maroon & Gold ahead 1-0.
The Gaels received an insurance goal from junior transfer Ansger Otto with just 36 seconds left in the contest. Alexander Abdalla sent a ball downfield to Otto, where Otto beat Adelphi goalkeeper Christopher Herrera one-on-one for Iona's second goal.
Despite the loss, Herrera was impressive in front of the net for the Panthers, making six saves. Iona's Borja Barbero stopped four. In the match, Iona led 23-9 in shot attempts and 3-2 in corner kicks.
The Gaels are back in action on Sep. 25, hosting Saint Joseph's at 1:00 pm. The game will be followed by the Iona women taking on Mount St. Mary's at 4:00 pm.
