Iona Women's Soccer Falls At Rider, 4-0
LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ – The Iona College women's soccer team dropped its Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference matchup against Rider on Saturday afternoon by a final score of 4-0. With the loss, the Gaels are 1-6-1 in MAAC play.
The Broncs got on the board in the 26th minute when redshirt senior Michelle Iacono netted her seventh of the season courtesy of assists from junior Kourtney Cunningham and sophomore Valeria Pascuet. Rider followed it up with its second goal in the 32nd minute; junior Meghan McCabe scored her first of the season off a ricochet from senior Shannon Kelly's original shot.
Rider held a 2-0 lead at the halftime break. The Broncs outshot the Gaels 10 to 5 and had 4 corners compared to 3 for the Maroon & Gold. Senior Julia Campagna and sophomore Mariah Elsenheimereach had shots on target coming in the 25th and 39th minute.
Iona pressed its offense forward in the second half, beginning the final period with four unanswered shots in the opening nine minutes. None of the attempts from junior Mariana Jaramillo, senior Marissa Dundas and junior Megan Wood tested Rider's keeper.
The Broncs answered the Gaels' swell with Shannon netting her team's third goal; score was assisted by Iacono. Rider scored their final goal in the 88th minute with Cunningham netting her fifth of the season.
The Gaels eked out a 9 to 8 shot advantage in the second half. It was a spread out attack for the Maroon & Gold with five different players record at least two shots.
Iona returns home on Wednesday, Oct. 18 when it hosts Saint Peter's at Mazzella Field for a 3:00 PM kickoff. Before the game, head coach Sarah Brady and her staff will honor the programs seven seniors and two graduate students as part of its annual senior day celebration.
