Irish men's soccer signs seven standouts
Seven standout soccer players from across the United States and globe have signed National Letters of Intent to become the latest additions to the University of Notre Dame men’s soccer program.
Five of the student-athletes hail from the United States, with each coming from a different state, while the Fighting Irish also welcome two international products. The group will supplement a program that has posted a 46-10-11 (.769) record over the last three seasons, won a conference title in each of those campaigns and captured the 2012 national championship.
Forward Ian Aschieris (Solana Beach, Calif.), midfielder Myles Brown (Richmond, Va.), midfielder/defender Sean Dedrick (Wilton, Conn.), midfielder Félicien Dumas (Tokyo, Japan/Paris, France), goalkeeper Ryan Krutz (Norman, Oklahoma), midfielder/forward Sean MacLeod (Troon, Scotland) and midfielder Thomas Ueland (Lexington, Ky.) will join the Fighting Irish for the 2015 campaign.
“Obviously at the moment we think it’s a great class,” Notre Dame head coach Bobby Clark says. “As I always say, I’ll tell you in three or four years just how good of a class it really is. We like all of these players and they all made a big impression on us sometime over the last couple of years. They also made a good impression on admissions as well so they’ve done well academically. On paper, it looks like a really good class and it’s a group that we’re really excited about.”

Bobby Clark on Ian Aschieris: “(Assistant coach) Greg Dalby first saw Ian out at the Surf Cup in San Diego a couple of years back and he really liked him. We’ve had the opportunity to watch him a couple times playing for his Surf team and he’s a very good player. He can play as a high forward, as an underneath forward and he can also play as a wide midfield player. He’s a good attacking player and he handles the ball very well. He has a good touch on the ball and good awareness. He’ll fit nicely into the way we play.”

Bobby Clark on Myles Brown: “We saw Myles play a couple times for his Richmond academy team when he was with the Richmond Strikers. He’s a very strong athlete and has a good engine. He is a two-way midfielder with his club team but I think he could play a lot of positions. I don’t think we’ll really know where he fits in until he comes here. He gets forward and he gets back. We liked him when we watched him and invited him to camp. We got a really close look at him when he came to our ID camp in the summer. We liked his personality as well and thought he’d be a good fit. He’s a very good student and has a willingness to learn.”

Bobby Clark on Sean Dedrick: “It’s good to have another Dedrick on the team. Sean sometimes plays as a striker for his club team, he sometimes plays as a central midfielder and the under-18 national team took him into camp and they played him as a center back. Once he comes here we’ll find his role. Both brothers (Kyle and Sean) are similar, but they have quite different personalities. Their body builds are different; Kyle is quick and fast, while Sean is bigger and is a player who looks more comfortable when he’s facing the play. I think he’s better when the game is in front of him, although he has on occasion played as a striker. One of the great things about this program is that we’ve had a lot of brothers come through here. We’ve had the Rellas brothers, the Beslers, the Shipps, the Mishus and now we have the Dedricks. It’s a nice endorsement for our program when one brother comes here and the next brother also wants to come here.”

Bobby Clark on Félicien Dumas: “Félicien is another lad who came to our camp. He’s based in Singapore right now and he goes to the international school in Singapore and he played with (current freshman) Jon Gallagher. He’s one of the outstanding young players in Singapore. He’s played in several all-star games and he wrote to us asking about coming to Notre Dame. I mentioned that he should come to our ID camp and he performed very, very well so we pursued him a little further after that. He’s a left-sided player who could be a defensive midfielder or a left-sided central defender. He could possibly even be a left back. He has a very good range of pass. He has a very strong build and very good feet and good vision. He gives us a nice left-sided addition to the squad.”

Bobby Clark on Ryan Krutz: “We saw Ryan play for Sporting Kansas City’s youth team at a Generation adidas tournament down in Dallas. We liked the way he played. He has good hands and saves the ball well. What I really liked about him is that he had excellent presence; he handled himself well in goal. Presence is one of those things you can’t teach because you either have it or you don’t have it. He was very calm, his distribution was good and he talked well. He’s from Oklahoma and he came up to Kansas City when he was scouted by Sporting to play on their youth squad. He trains with their first team in the morning and later goes to school and he also holds down a job. That shows you how dedicated and mature he is as a young man and we’re excited to have him join us.”

Bobby Clark on Sean MacLeod: “Sean’s grandfather was my coach when Scotland went to Argentina for the 1978 World Cup. Sean had been thinking about coming to America for college and to play and his dad called me up and asked how they should go about this. I actually think it was his grandmother who mentioned they should call me since I was in America. I said the only way I could tell where he could play and fit in would be if he came to our ID camp. Sean came to our camp and we really liked him. It’ll be funny having my World Cup coach’s grandson play for us here at Notre Dame. Sean has good size and he needs to put on a little bit of weight, but I think he’ll fill out nicely. He has very good feet and a nice touch on the ball. He can play as a high striker, an underneath striker and he could also play in the wide midfield area. He’s very much an attacking player and quite similar to Ian Aschieris. I think Sean will score goals and make goals.”

Bobby Clark on Thomas Ueland: “We saw Thomas down at the Disney tournament two years ago. Coach (BJ) Craig had seen him before and liked him. We talked to people who knew him well from the Kentucky area and everyone spoke very highly of him. He’s another left-footed player. He’s an attacking player who could play up front, but I think he could also play out wide. He could be a fantastic attacking fullback. We like our fullbacks to be like wingers and I think Thomas could do that, but similar to (current junior) Patrick Hodan, he could play on the right side of midfield and come inside and, also like Patrick, score goals.”
